5 Steps to Declutter Your House and Make it Livable

A house full of unused items and materials can be detrimental your health, effective thinking and creativity. Not only that, it can be a host to some disease causing organisms like viruses, insects, cockroaches, etc.

To declutter your house and make it more livable, follow the five simple steps below.

1. List down reasons why you want to declutter your house

One of the first steps to decluttering your house is to set goals about it. In other words, ask yourself why you’d like to live in a house furnished with just the relevant materials that only serve your purpose?

Come up with as many answers as possible. The benefit of this exercise is that it will help open your mind to the benefits of living a minimalist life. Plus, it will motivate you to take the necessary steps to declutter your house. This exercise may seem simple to you. Don’t underrate its efficacy. It’s very effective.

2. Write down items that you don’t use at home

Once you’re done with the exercise mentioned above, take a piece of paper and go round your house. Jot down every single item and material that you’ve not touched for months, better still, years. Those items have no purpose in your other than to occupy some space. Be true to yourself and list down every item that have not been used for a long time.

Take a look around your house and list down all the items that you don’t touch. This won’t work when you’re sitting down to take note of what you don’t use. You’ll have to get your lazy ass up and move around your house from one place to another.

3. Pick items that you think will be useful in future

The next step is to take the time and go through all the items and materials that you intend to discard. Pick the ones that you’ll need in the future. But don’t be tempted to pick so many of them.

Only choose about 2-3 items that you honestly think will be useful in the nearest future. Taking more than three items will not make the whole idea of decluttering your house as effective as it should be. So don’t be tempted.

4. Donate unwanted items to charity within your locality

Once you’ve listed all the materials and items that you no longer want, and have picked about two or three of them that you’ll need in future, it’s time to get rid of the undesired ones. You can get rid of them in two ways; you can dispose them off or donate them to charity. I’m sure you’ll choose the latter option. This means you’re nice a person. Any charity that you’ll be donating the items to will be very appreciative.

5. Curb you unreasonable buying habit

Now that you’ve gotten rid of the materials and items in your house, the most important thing to do now is to control your buying habit. Impulsive buying is one of the leading causes of cluttering and hoarding. From now onward, resolve to buy only the things that you really need. Once you resolve to stop buying impulsively, you’ll be amazed at how much money you’ll be able to save.

This might sound so simple to you but it’s very feasible and effective. Give it a try for only a week and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
